Opening Creatures

The Van Ostadestraat Biennial opens on Saturday, May 20 from 3:00 to 7:00 pm. During the Biennial, two exhibitions will be on view organized by GoMulan Gallery and Galerie Fleur and Wouter. GoMulan Gallery is presenting the work of Sam Hersbach and Jan Steenman in the exhibition 'Creatures.' Fleur and Wouter show in the solo exhibition 'Milos' the work of Natascha Mankowski. The exhibition can be seen through Sunday, June 18, and will therefore also be available to visit during Amsterdam Art Week (May 31-June 4).

Sam Hersbach (b. 1995) graduated from the Utrecht School of the Arts in 2017 and Hersbach graduated from the Ateliers in Amsterdam in 2020. Hersbach draws his inspiration from material such as technical developments and nature documentaries. Paradoxically, the result is a world full of figures from reality, fantasy where mostly Hersbach's imagination rules. An example is the work "between catfish and scream" with which he won the free painting prize in 2018. This work was created after seeing a documentary about catfish chasing pigeons. This makes his work humorous and serious at the same time.

Sam Hersbach's art is a fascinating and engaging exploration of the world. Through his use of both figurative and material elements, he creates compelling and compelling stories that challenge viewers to see the world in new ways.

Jan Steenman (b. 1995) lives and works in Geneva. He creates performances, paintings and sculptures. In 2018, he graduated from KABK in The Hague and in 2022 he obtained his MA from the Haute école d'art et de design in Geneva. In his sculptural work, Steenman references micro-anatomy and uses cellular structures as inspiration to create shapes and textures into surrealistic creatures. For example, a two-headed monster or a meter-long DNA strand floating weightlessly above the ground.
