Culture Nature, group exhibition Huize Frankendael

Exhibition at Huize Frankendael which opens on March 19 with works of Jonat Deelstra, Sophie Steengracht and Jarik Jongman.

On Sunday 19 March from 15:00 to 18:00, the group exhibition 'Culture Nature' with works by Jonat Deelstra, Jarik Jongman, Ulrike Rehm and Sophie Steengracht will open at Huize Frankendael. The exhibition Culture Nature is curated by GoMulan Gallery. In his oil paintings, Jongman depicts abandoned buildings where nature has taken over, Deelstra shows cultivated nature by depicting hunting dogs for example, Steengracht paints with inks acquired from a garden she layed out with help of the Mondriaan Fund, and Ulrike Rehm made sculptural work that can be linked to the garden of Huize Frankendael.

About the artists

Jarik Jongman worked as Anselm Kiefer's assistant in France after studying at the Arnhem Academy of Art. He exhibited regularly abroad, including in Berlin, London, New York, Jerusalem and twice in collateral events at the Venice Biennale, in 2009 and 2011.

In 2010, he won the (shared) first prize of the UK National Open Art Competition with jury president Gavin Turk. His work has been selected for the Threadneedle prize and the John Moores prize and exhibited at the

Liverpool Biennale in 2012. In 2017, he won the prestigious Luxembourg Art Prize.

Jonat Deelstra has been living and working in Amsterdam. In 2018, Jonat obtained his Bachelor in Illustration from the HKU. Since then, he has mainly worked as a painter, but he also likes to reach for new materials. Jonat Deelstra's paintings have magical realistic features. his paintings are alienating as if something ominous is about to happen.

Ulrike Rehm was born in Germany in Halle. In 2006, she graduated from the Rietveld Academy and received her BA in Fine Arts. In 2011, she graduated for her MA at the Sandberg Institute. Rehm's greatest sources of inspiration are folkloric narratives, traditions, archetypal figures and their inherent symbolism and associations. Curiosity and experimentation drive Rehm's artistic development and inform her versatile use of materials. Rehm can be found in various private, museum and corporate collections. Such as, Akzo Nobel Art Foundation (Amsterdam), Louis Vuitton (Asia) and Museum Arnhem.

During her childhood, Sophie Steengracht  was surrounded by animals and nature. Transformations and the symbolic relationships between humans and nature are a common thread in her work. She is inspired by nature's processes. In 2021, Steengracht created a biodynamic garden in which she grows and studies plants, draws and photographs. She also uses pigments out of this garden.

In 2018, Steengracht won a grant from the van Vlissingen Art Foundation. Her work was shown at the Singer Laren Museum and at Art Rotterdam 2022 at Prospects & Concepts. Steengrachts work can be found in various private and corporate collections. Her work is currently on display in the 'Spiritual Urgency' exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam.
